Europe: a land of migrants

As we "celebrate" World Refugee Day on June 20, 2017, thus paying tribute to those of us who have been or are being forced into exile, towards Europe, in particular, political and media debates on the topic of migration continue inexorably in Europe…

Perhaps we should ask ourselves how the economy underlies these discussions, as justifiable as they may be. In fact, can we say that "we" will always have "refugees" in Europe? Because, the exile which some of us are forced to endure, is it not the result of what others have undertaken? In a way, the forced migration of some would be the result of the free migration of others.

Let’s not forget, or let’s remember, migration to avoid war or as a result of war, migration in times of peace or received with open arms, in both cases, there is an underlying process at work: an economy based on nationalistic conquests would drive out a pacifist-based economy and vice-versa. But, where would we find a happy medium, in this particular case, for Europe?

Here, in Brussels, Josefa encourages us to overlook the intentions of some "to conquer" or "be generous" towards others, by positioning itself, not as an institutional stakeholder that wants to manage "expansionistic needs" or "humanitarian crises", but as a person or nation directly or potentially affected by the actual or potential risk of a forced migration.

As a result, the person, the nation or Europe become active not on behalf of a political, economic, or philanthropic "interest" (or debt), but rather "I am a migrant because we are all migrants, and we are all migrants because I am a migrant."

Europe, a land of migrants, do not forget your warring past, engendering exiles, in order to better prepare your future, a source of peaceful journeys and hospitality without borders.
